Astrophysical probes of strong field General Relativity (PRETALK for Students at 15:30)
Two currently operating observatories give direct access to the strong-field regime of General Relativity (GR) in an unprecedented way: The gravitational wave detector, advanced LIGO, and a combined interferometric array of radio telescopes spanning the globe, the Event Horizon telescope. Advanced LIGO recently detected gravitational waves consistent with a merging black hole pair whose evolution obeys the dynamics dictated by Einstein's field equations of GR. > The Event Horizon telescope is a global effort to image for the first time a black hole, i.e. its imprint on the surrounding gas.
