Theory of the Standard Model of Particle Physics I
Carlo Ewerz
Lecture Course at Universität Heidelberg, Winter Term 2005/06
General Information
Time and place:
13.-17. February 2006, each day at 14 s.t. - 17
INF 227 SR 2.402 (Kirchhoff-Institut)
The course will be given in English if there is a demand for it,
otherwise in German.
The course will be continued
(Theory of the Standard Model of Particle Physics II)
in the following semester in the week 24.-28. April 2006.
The two courses together are suitable for an exam (for example
"Wahlfach" for diploma exam). I will not
be available for exams, but several other faculty members are available
for exams on these lectures. Please contact me directly if you plan
to choose this course for an exam.
Contents
Relativistic Quantum Mechanics
Relativistic Quantum Fields
Gauge Fields and the Standard Model, Electroweak Interactions
Renormalization
The course will include an introduction to relativistic
quantum field theory but with emphasis
on applications rather than formal details.
Topics of Part II of the course (in summer semester 2006) will
be:
Quantum Chromodynamics, CP Violation, Neutrino Physics,
Physics Beyond the Standard Model
Prerequisites
Good knowledge of quantum mechanics and special relativity is expected,
a knowledge of at least the basics of quantum field theory would be
helpful. Here are Revision Notes covering
the essential material needed for the course.
Course Material
Lecture notes will be made available in the library (Philosophenweg 16).
For testing your understanding of the lectures you can try to
work out some Examples.
